Would you like to work with a Mentor?
Individual Support is Available from a Mentor
There are many opportunities for Service Users and Carers to get involved in and influence the planning and delivery of Mental Health Services.
This will often involve attending meetings, panels committees and networks. It can also include becoming a board member or a governor to a Trust. Such advisory roles can involve sharing your own views and acting as a representative who shares the views of others.
Such a role can be fulfilling and rewarding but also challenging, and often there is limited support available to talk through and explore any problems you encounter, or to develop your skills.
What are the benefits of working with a mentor?
Mentoring can help a person to become more confident and effective in their role. It can
increase skills and knowledge. It can provide the opportunity to discuss problems and challenges, finding new ways to approach and overcome them.
The North West Mentoring Scheme provides experienced and trained Mentors, all of whom have experience of being in similar advisory and representative roles, to work with and support others newer to the role, who are experiencing difficulties or challenges within their current role, or who would like to become involved in such a role in the future.
What will a good mentor do?
Share their own skills and experiences in a positive way
Act as a sounding board to work through different, sometimes challenging, situations
Listen to concerns, asking thoughtful questions to help positive progress
Provide support and encouragement to find effictive ways of communicating and
influncing in an advisory or representative role.
